Surface Painting and Design began in 2001 with a commitment to excellence and reliability, servicing the Bay Area in a variety of painting capacities since then.
The Crew
Owner and operator Rye Nazarian has been painting since the age of thirteen. Growing up in New Jersey, his father often conflated the idea of raising children with the idea of having access to “cheap” labor for his own contracting business. Usurped child labor law aside, Rye now brings 25 years of painting experience and a BA from UC Berkeley to every project.
Mike, the lead foreman, has been with the company since day one. He presides over larger projects and sets the standard for quality. He has been in numerous bands in the Bay Area including The Phantom Limbs and Scurvy Dogs.
Brain, a Bay Area native, has been with the company since 2004. While also running larger projects, he has become essential in innovating scheduling practices, personnel development and training techniques. He has played in and produced a number of bands and electronic artists over the years.
Sam has been with the Surface Painting and Design since 2006. Sam runs large exteriors and small interior projects. He often works in conjunction with senior foreman to maintain equipment and material supplies. His versatility as a tradesman is echoed in his musical career where he plays drums, base and guitar.
Carlos is Surface Painting’s small projects foreman. Carlos has been with the company 3 years. He is outfitted with every possible tool and material to perform any given task at a moments notice. He is essential in allowing Surface Painting and Design to respond to calls for small to medium sized jobs within a day to one week. Originally from Peru, he enjoys racing cars and exploring the natural beauty of the Bay Area.
Rick is the most recent addition to Surface Painting’s senior staff, though he has had a relationship with the company for over seven years. Rick runs the off-site workspace and is the “spray master”. With 35 years of experience, Rick performs much of the work involved in applying finishes in our spray booth, where various materials are applied to cabinets, furniture, doors and metals. In his spare time he builds motorcycles, trains horses, and spends time with his wife of 20 plus years, Stacey.
There are a number of other team members who belong to Surface Painting and Design, providing skill and support, allowing Surface to tackle any size job in an efficient a manner. All these individuals have at least 5 years painting experience and have been thoroughly vetted and trained to execute the high-quality work that people have come to expect form us.

Surface Painting & Design specializes in a high-end fine finishes for both new construction and complete restoration of existing woodwork and architectural details.
We pride ourselves on craftsman style brushwork in both oil and latex paint.
We are also capable of spray finishes, which can be more adaptable to time constraints, producing unblemished surfaces on both residential and commercial projects.
The large majority of our employees have been with us for over five years, demonstrating a commitment to perfection and trustworthiness.
Our jobsites are orderly, neat, and clean. Our crews are polite, informed, and articulate.

The Spray Booth
Surface Painting and Design has a legal spray booth with 3,500 square feet of workspace. We do pick-up and delivery from your home, factory or job site. We apply any material you require with special knowledge of all the Greenest technology. Casework, cabinets, furniture, metal railings, picture frames, or just stock trim, we do it all. Whether you just need your product primed and shipped, or taken to completion for on-site installation, we are capable of handling all matter of logistical planning and execution. Bids can be completed with a site visit or by simply emailing elevations and/or photographs. References and samples are available upon request.

Surface Painting maintains a small projects division that allows us to respond to most requests for small jobs within a week.
